The ultimate guide to navigating the NBTs
NBT
Have you been hearing the word NBTs way too much that you’re starting to feel like you should probably worry about it? Or maybe you just want to get more context around what this is. Well, here is all you need to know!
So what are the National Benchmark Tests?
The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are two very important exams that universities use to determine your academic readiness. The exams are separated into two tests: Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) and the Mathematics (MAT) test.
Both tests are each three hours long and are multiple-choice. BUT, don’t let that fool you into thinking it must be easy. The AQL exam tests two things – Academic Literacy (AL) tests your ability to engage with the demands of university academics, whilst Quantitative Literacy (QL) tests your ability to manage situations and solve problems in context with higher education. Lastly, the Mathematics exam (MAT) tests your mathematical concepts with higher education.
Why are the NBTs so important?
The NBTs are important as they serve as extra admission criteria to determine whether a learner’s application will be successful or not. They also help universities identify learners who may need support.
Where do you apply to write the NBTs?
You can apply to write the NBT test on the NBT website. Make sure you choose a date that leaves you enough time to prepare!
How much does it cost to write the NBTs?
To write just the AQL test, you would pay R145.
For the AQL and MAT tests, you would pay R290.
To get a re-mark R250.
What can I do to prepare for the NBT test?
Learners usually take preparing for the NBTs lightly as most people think it’s multiple choice so why would I need to prepare? Right?
Well preparing for these tests is important and we’ll tell you why. Firstly you are not allowed to use a calculator for both tests, the work you are being tested on is not necessarily at the level that you do in high school. Lastly, this is your one shot to make a good impression with your University application.
